Before closing MCE and while it's buffering or while you paused live TV, copy each file to a different folder, organize by time and rename with extension .wtv After that it's done use the free version of MC-TVConverter(2) and it will convert the files to MPG I use MPEG2 HQ, it should take a few seconds to complete. Good Luck ! here's the link for MC-TVConverter: http://mctvconverter.vivolum.net/

According to this thread (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpromedia/thread/a2309483-e14c-4842-9713-9e1c9ca549f2?prof=required), SBF files seems to be direct recorded output from Stream Buffer Engine, hence they don't contain full blown DRM info compare to WTV files destined for longer use. So WMC locks them as soon as buffered channel is switched, and they're erased at any attempt to watch them afterwards. Otherwise from decoding standpoint they are the same as WTV - just try latest VideoRedo to see no difference.

I assume SBF is just a version of WTV container, specifically used to save Pause Buffer content. Once playback stops, it should be locked for DRM purposes, since these files are a mix saved from various channels, as you switch channels. They are auto deleted once in a while by a Scheduler Task, or on reboot. Inside is MPEG2 video & MPEG1 Audio, and DRM data. My question is, how to get MPEG staff out of this container to make it playable?

Companies need to learn from the military about computer security. And, captcha codes can now be read easily - no human intervention.

Very useful!
The DVR_MS file is created from the WTV show and the conversion takes place.
However the adds removal doesn't seem to work (on 7 64). The mpg file still has the commercials.
I've tried first without ShowAnalyzer (unchecked the box during installation of DVRMSToolbox). After about 6 or 7 minutes, it declared that SA was badly installed and started to use Comskip.. (Using the DVRMSToolbox GUI, these attempts are immediately skipped; the result is the same though..)
Then I "repaired" DVRMSToolbox and it downloaded & installed ShowAnalyzer (trial version).
It still gives the same erroneous xml file.
Also, there's a little mistake at the end of the script: with rename the 2nd argument cannot include a path.
Thanks a lot!

OK, I've got it: the files must be copied and renamed while they're still active. As soon as MCE is closed, they are either deleted or become unusable.
And indeed, they are immediately playable in wmp and can be joined and encoded with EE4.
Great find! Thanks!

I've searched the web for weeks too for a way to record or convert the files in the W7 MCE buffer folder. So far, I've only found Spyn Doctor's JHTAddin but it doesn't work on 64bit PCs and, for win7, there's also the problem of the new extension for these files (.tmp.sbf).
I've tried your method on a file the same size as yours (510,720KB),copied it elsewhere and renamed it Tennis.wtv.
I then tried to open it with VLC, Media Player Classic(64) and, as for you, that failed.
Whenever I tried with Windows Media Player, Movie Maker, Media Center, not only dit it always fail to open it but the file itself was immediately reduced from 498MB to 512KB.
The same result was obtained using Expression Encoder 4 (with Dotnet Framework 4 required during the installation).
A message in red appears after clicking Import and selecting the file: Unknown error..
And again, in Explorer, the file size shrinks to 512KB..
(I also noticed that your file (510,720KB in Explorer) shows as 86MB in EEncoder..)
