End of semester RUSH!

Filed under: Uncategorized — spiro @ 11:33 pm

Why am I not blogging at all lately? That’s because I literally have a *fuckload* of work to do. I am actually really happy now, because I just worked out the kinks to finish my AI Scheme programming assignment (I really hate Scheme BTW) and I just moved on to the theory part. Where I have to read up on all the stuff since the midterm, simply because I have no clue :) I do attend class physically, but that’s about it.

Just to fill you in on my busy busy hectic end of semester, Tomorrow I will be working all-out on our graphics project, Friday I hope to get the AI assignment completely done, this weekend we’re planning to have a head start on our AI project. I just learned that Monday we have to present our Graphics project today (ouch). If I have time, I might cram in some work for TCE, but I highly doubt it.

At least my finals are a week after the end of semester, so I will have some time to finish end of semester work, and study for them.

Hacking Democracy

Filed under: Uncategorized — spiro @ 10:06 pm

There’s a nice documentary produced by HBO on Google Video about the unreliability of votes tallied by electronic voting machines, and how easy it is to manipulate an election. It is quite interesting, to say the least.

But how can computers make mistakes? It’s a simple number that increments as a vote is being cast after all. Well, these companies are conveniently using copyright and trade secret laws to prohibit anybody from accessing the source code. That’s pretty much equivalent to shipping all election ballots to be counted by a private company, and then throw them away. Nobody would think about doing that right? Well, electronic voting just enables that sort of thing.

Then it’s so funny to see them going around the middle east with ambitious plans to implement democracy. Like… try this at home first! Thank god, in Canada, there’s no such thing. Well, they did use it in the last municipal elections, with disappointing results. Following this, we were smart enough to impose a moratorium on electronic voting.

The Flu

Filed under: Uncategorized — spiro @ 10:08 pm

I haven’t been doing much at all lately. I caught the stupid flu, once again. This one’s one of the really bad ones I sort of get every 2 years. It started last Saturday, while working on my 490, my throat was very sore. Come night time, I had such a fever that I could not sleep at all. I was at least able to finish up and submit whatever assignments I had on time, and managed to go to school on Monday and Wednesday (although Wednesday was really painful). There’s a whole slew of projects and one more assignment due at the end of the month, so I hope I won’t have to struggle too much, even though I totally missed out on this week so far. Anyway, for my own sake, let’s hope this shitty flu ends soon.

I’m really thinking seriously about getting the flu shot. It is kind of late, as this is (believe it or not) my second cold this season, but I really wonder why I am so vulnerable to these, whereas I am otherwise in pretty good health. My dad, for example, might get at most 2 colds in a year, if he gets one at all. Do I have to start wearing a fucking mask around? Seriously, this influenza shit is totally starting to piss me off big time.

Right now I believe I might be getting better, though I can feel a ton of crap in my lungs, I completely lost my voice, and I cough like a madman. I also feel all sweaty, but my fever is under control.

The better news, is that I did relatively well in my midterms, getting full marks in A.I., and a very decent mark in geology.
